Broadcasting Time Cannot Be Approximated within a Factor of 57 56 ?

چکیده
In the beginning the information is available only at some sources of a given network. The aim is to inform all nodes of the given network. Therefore, every node can inform its neighborhood sequentially and newly informed nodes can proceed in parallel within their neighborhoods. The process of informing one node needs one time unit. The broadcasting problem is to compute the minimum length of such a broadcasting schedule. The computational complexity of broadcasting is investigated and for the rst time a constant lower inapproximability bound is stated, i.e. it is NP-hard to distinguish between graphs with broadcasting time smaller than b and larger than (57 56 ?)b for any > 0. This improves on the lower bounds known for multiple and single source broadcasting, which could only state that it is NP-hard to distinguish between graphs with broadcasting time b and b +1, for any b 3. This statement is proven by reduction from E3-SAT, the analysis of which needs a carefully designed book-keeping and counting argument.

Logical s-t Min-Cut Problem: An Extension to the Classic s-t Min-Cut Problem
Let $G$ be a weighted digraph, $s$ and $t$ be two vertices of $G$, and $t$ is reachable from $s$. The logical $s$-$t$ min-cut (LSTMC) problem states how $t$ can be made unreachable from $s$ by removal of some edges of $G$ where (a) the sum of weights of the removed edges is minimum and (b) all outgoing edges of any vertex of $G$ cannot be removed together. If we ignore the second constraint, ca...
متن کاملOn the inapproximability of broadcasting time
We investigate the problem of broadcasting information in a given undirected network. At the beginning information is given at some processors, called sources. Within each time unit step every informed processor can inform only one neighboring processor. The broadcasting problem is to determine the length of the shortest broadcasting schedule for a network, called the broadcasting time of the n...
متن کاملInapproximability of Maximum r-Regular Induced Connected Subgraph Problems
Given a graph G = (V,E) on n vertices, the MAXIMUM r-REGULAR INDUCED CONNECTED SUBGRAPH (r-MaxRICS) problems ask for a maximum sized subset of vertices S ⊆ V such that the induced subgraph G[S] on S is connected and r-regular. For r = 2, it is known that 2-MaxRICS is NP-hard and cannot be approximated within a factor of n1−ε in polynomial time for any ε > 0 if P 6 = NP . In this paper, we show ...
متن کاملMinimum-Weight Cycle Covers and Their Approximability
A cycle cover of a graph is a set of cycles such that every vertex is part of exactly one cycle. An L-cycle cover is a cycle cover in which the length of every cycle is in the set L ⊆ N. We investigate how well L-cycle covers of minimum weight can be approximated. For undirected graphs, we devise a polynomial-time approximation algorithm that achieves a constant approximation ratio for all sets...
متن کاملOn Approximability of the Independent/Connected Edge Dominating Set Problems
We investigate polynomial-time approximability of the problems related to edge dominating sets of graphs. When edges are unit-weighted, the edge dominating set problem is polynomially equivalent to the minimum maximal matching problem, in either exact or approximate computation, and the former problem was recently found to be approximable within a factor of 2 even with arbitrary weights. It wil...
